Help with the HearAura iPhone and Apple Watch app: pairing hearing aids, joining broadcasts, captions, and Channels.

A person reads every message and replies, usually within two business days. Accessibility problems go first: if anything is hard to use with VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, or another assistive technology, put "Accessibility" in the subject.

It saves a round trip to include: your iPhone model and iOS version, your hearing aid or earbud brand and model, and what you were trying to join (a venue, a TV transmitter, a friend's Channel).

Which hearing aids work? 1:01

The three kinds of Bluetooth hearing devices, and how to tell which you have.

Read the transcript

Which hearing aids work? Hearing aids use Bluetooth in three ways. Only some can hear broadcasts.

1. Made for iPhone. iPhone keeps them connected. Pair in Settings, Accessibility, Hearing Devices. Many newer ones also use LE Audio and can join broadcasts.

2. LE Audio, not Made for iPhone. The kind Auracast uses. Add them in HearAura with Find them nearby. iPhone asks you to pair.

3. Classic Bluetooth only. Like headphones. Music and calls work, but not Auracast. No app can change that.

How to tell which you have. 1. Look for Auracast or LE Audio on the box. 2. Paired in Hearing Devices? They are Made for iPhone. 3. Only LE Audio devices appear in Find them nearby. Having the maker's app doesn't tell you which kind.

Pair Made for iPhone hearing aids 0:46

Pair them in Settings. HearAura finds them by itself.

Pair Made for iPhone hearing aids. Open Settings. Tap Accessibility, then Hearing Devices.

Turn your hearing aids off, then on. Battery doors: open, then close. Charger: in, then out. You then have about three minutes to pair.

Pair each ear. 1. Tap their name when it appears. 2. Tap Pair for each ear. 3. Wait for the beeps and a checkmark. On iOS 27, tap Pair MFi Hearing Device first.

Come back to HearAura. HearAura finds them by itself. It says Connected when they are ready.

For hearing aids and earbuds that are not Made for iPhone.

Not Made for iPhone? On Listen, tap Not Made for iPhone? Find them nearby. It's for LE Audio hearing aids and earbuds.

Make them easy to find. Turn your hearing aids off, then on. Earbuds: put them in pairing mode.

Tap Add. Both ears show up together. Only LE Audio devices are listed.

Tap Pair when iPhone asks. iPhone asks once for each ear. Then you can join broadcasts.

Next time. HearAura reconnects to them by itself. Remove from HearAura, on the same page, stops that. Classic Bluetooth devices never appear, because they can't hear broadcasts.

Join a broadcast 0:42

Scan a QR code or search nearby, then set the broadcast volume.

Join a broadcast. Scan the QR code on the venue's sign. Or tap Scan for broadcasts to search nearby.

No broadcast in the list? Not every transmitter shows up in a search. Look for the venue's QR code sign, or ask staff for it.

Your aids tune in. HearAura sends the join. The sound goes straight to your hearing aids.

Now Playing. Change the broadcast volume, or mute it. Tap Leave to stop listening.

Common questions

Do I need special hardware?

To hear an Auracast broadcast you need hearing aids or earbuds that can receive Auracast (LE Audio), and a venue or transmitter that is broadcasting. Without that hardware you can still use the built-in demo (Listen tab, "Try the demo"), on-device captions, and Channels.

Which hearing aids work?

Hearing aids use Bluetooth in three ways. Made for iPhone aids pair in iPhone Settings, and many newer ones also have LE Audio and can join broadcasts. LE Audio aids that aren't Made for iPhone are added inside HearAura with Find hearing aids nearby. Classic Bluetooth only aids, like ordinary headphones, can't hear Auracast, and no app can change that. In the app, Settings → Device check tells you what yours can do.

HearAura says no hearing aids are connected.

  1. Made for iPhone aids: pair them first in Settings → Accessibility → Hearing Devices. Turn the aids off and on (battery doors open and close, or charger in and out), tap their name, and tap Pair for each ear. Come back to HearAura; it finds them by itself.
  2. Other LE Audio aids and earbuds: on the Listen tab, tap "Not Made for iPhone? Find them nearby". Turn the aids off and on, or put earbuds in pairing mode, then tap Add and tap Pair when iPhone asks, once per ear.
  3. Check that Bluetooth is on and HearAura has Bluetooth permission (Settings → HearAura).
  4. Some models need a firmware update from the manufacturer's own app before they support Auracast.

My hearing aids don't appear in Find hearing aids nearby.

Only devices that use LE Audio are listed. Aids that stream only over classic Bluetooth never appear, because they can't hear broadcasts. Made for iPhone aids that iPhone already has connected aren't listed there either; HearAura uses them directly. If you think your aids should appear, email us the exact model name and we'll check what it supports.

I joined a broadcast but hear nothing.

The phone never plays the broadcast; your hearing aids receive it straight from the transmitter. Check that the broadcast is on the air (ask the venue), that you are within range, and that broadcast volume in the app is up. An encrypted broadcast needs the code from the venue's QR sign. Not every transmitter shows up in a search, so look for the QR sign or ask staff.

Can I change my hearing aids' programs?

New in version 1.2: if your aids offer their programs over the standard Bluetooth hearing access service, they appear on the Listen tab. Some brands only offer programs in their own app; HearAura can't change that.

How does Take turns work in Channels?

The host picks Take turns when starting a Channel. One person speaks at a time, everyone sees who is next, and the speaker's captions are shown large on every phone. Channels run over the local network, so no internet is needed.

Captions look wrong or lag.

Microphone captions are approximate and depend on room noise and distance from the speaker; the app labels them that way. When a venue publishes captions for its broadcast, HearAura shows those instead. All transcription runs on your phone.

Volume from my Apple Watch stopped working when I locked the phone.

Update to HearAura 1.2 or later, which keeps the hearing-aid connection alive in the background. If the watch controls still do nothing, open HearAura on the phone once so the connection is re-established, and keep the phone within range.

Why does the app ask for Bluetooth, microphone, camera, or location?

Bluetooth talks to your hearing aids. The microphone and speech recognition power on-device captions and Channels. The camera only scans Auracast QR codes. Location sorts venues by distance. Each permission is optional and used only for the feature it names; the privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my data?

HearAura has no account and stores nothing about you on our servers. Deleting the app removes everything it saved on the phone. Anything you chose to send us (an anonymous device-compatibility result or a diagnostics email) can be removed on request.

I make hearing aids or transmitters, or I run a venue.

Any Auracast transmitter works; HearAura isn't tied to a brand. Venues can make a print-ready "Scan to Listen" QR sign in the venue portal. Hearing aid makers: the longer explainer shows what an aid needs for HearAura to drive it, and a two-minute check. Email support@hearaura.app with model names and we'll check what they support.

Report a bug

Email support@hearaura.app with what you expected, what happened, and the steps to get there. If the app crashed, Settings → Diagnostics in the app shows the crash report iOS kept; use the share button there to attach it. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send it.
